What is campus hiring in India?

Written by Vaibhavi Vaidya. Reviewed by Ranjana Vaidya, CA. Last reviewed 25 October 2026. 3 min read

Quick answer: Campus hiring means recruiting final-year students straight from colleges, usually through the institute’s placement office, for jobs that start after graduation. In India the offer comes months before the joining date. Since 17 September 2026, many fresher salaries also fall inside mandatory EPF, because the wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month.

  • Every hire, including a fresher, must get a written appointment letter under the Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025.
  • In an EPF-covered establishment, hires with PF wages up to ₹25,000 a month must be enrolled.
  • ESI applies to hires earning ₹21,000 a month or less, so many entry-level support roles are covered.
  • A post-employment non-compete is void under section 27 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872.

How does campus recruitment work in India?

Through the college’s placement office, on the college’s timetable.

You register with the placement office, share a job description and the pay on offer, then run tests and interviews on a slot the college gives you. Offers go out in the final year. Students join after their results, often months later.

Hence campus recruitment india carries its own risks. A long gap between offer and joining invites offer dropout, especially if a better offer lands at the same campus a week later.

Some employers pair campus intake with a probation period and a training bond. Our note on probation under an EOR covers the first part. Bonds can hold. In Bharat Aviation v Rahul Soni (2026), the Bombay High Court found a training bond valid and enforceable. Keep any repayment figure close to your real training cost, since courts award only reasonable compensation.

What does a fresher cost after the EPF change?

More than the offer letter suggests, if it predates September 2026.

Let’s say you hire a Pune graduate engineer at ₹45,000 a month gross. Basic is ₹22,500. That is 50% of gross, the floor set by the wage definition rule.

ItemBefore 17 Sep 2026From 17 Sep 2026
PF wages (basic)₹22,500₹22,500
Mandatory EPF?No, above the ₹15,000 ceilingYes, within ₹25,000
Employer PF at 12%₹0 if excluded₹2,700 a month
Employee PF at 12%₹0 if excluded₹2,700 a month

So your annual cost rises by ₹32,400. Her take-home falls by ₹2,700 a month.

Budget for both before the placement season. Graduates who signed before the change and then see a smaller first payslip can feel misled, and a two-line note in the offer letter explaining PF prevents that conversation.

How does campus hiring work under an EOR?

You run the campus drive. The EOR employs the graduates.

Tell the placement office early that the appointment letter will come from your EOR’s Indian entity. The EOR then enrols each fresher in EPF, links a UAN and pays salary from month one. You still choose.

How does Remunance onboard your campus hires?

Remunance issues appointment letters, sets up PF and ESI, provisions laptops and runs onboarding for each graduate from its Pune entity. We have hired across 34 Indian cities, so a cohort spread over tier 1, 2 and 3 cities is routine. Read why Indian youth are a global asset, then plan your first graduate intake with us.

What else do people ask about campus placement?

What is the difference between campus hiring and lateral hiring?

Campus hiring brings in students with no full-time experience. Lateral hiring brings in experienced people from other employers, who usually have a notice period to serve.

Do freshers need an appointment letter in India?

Yes. The PIB release on the Labour Codes says all workers get appointment letters, including young workers joining their first job.

Can a foreign company hire from Indian campuses without an entity?

Yes, through an employer of record. The EOR becomes the legal employer, while you run interviews and choose the graduates.
