Quick answer: An employer contribution is money you pay into statutory schemes on top of an employee’s salary. In India it covers 12% employer PF on wages up to ₹25,000 a month, plus EDLI and PF admin charges. Add ESI at 3.25% for staff earning up to ₹21,000, a gratuity provision and, where eligible, statutory bonus.
- Employer PF is 12% of wages, so ₹3,000 a month at the ₹25,000 ceiling in force since 17 September 2026.
- Of that ₹3,000, ₹2,083 goes to the pension scheme (EPS) and ₹917 to the employee’s PF account.
- EDLI insurance and EPF admin charges add 0.5% each, about ₹125 apiece at the ceiling.
- Statutory bonus of at least 8.33% applies to employees earning up to ₹21,000 a month.
Which employer contributions apply in India?
Five, and only two of them depend on salary bands. Here is the full set.
| Contribution | Rate | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Employer PF | 12% of wages, capped at ₹3,000 a month | Wages up to ₹25,000 (higher by choice) |
| EDLI | 0.5% of PF wages | Everyone on PF |
| EPF admin | 0.5% of PF wages | Everyone on PF |
| ESI | 3.25% of gross wages | Up to ₹21,000 a month |
| Gratuity provision | About 4.81% of wages | Everyone, paid on exit |
| Statutory bonus | 8.33% to 20% | Wages up to ₹21,000 a month |
The EPFO contribution rate chart lists the PF, EDLI and admin splits. ESIC publishes its own contribution rates.
How much does an employer contribute per employee?
It depends heavily on pay. Lower earners cost proportionally more.
Compare a Pune engineer on ₹1,00,000 gross (wages ₹50,000) with a support executive on ₹20,000 gross (wages ₹16,000).
| Line, per month | Engineer | Support executive |
|---|---|---|
| Employer PF | ₹3,000 | ₹1,920 |
| EDLI | ₹125 | ₹80 |
| EPF admin | ₹125 | ₹80 |
| ESI | Nil | ₹650 |
| Gratuity provision | ₹2,405 | ₹770 |
| Total | ₹5,655 | ₹3,500 |
| Share of gross | 5.7% | 17.5% |
The support executive also earns statutory bonus. It is calculated on ₹7,000 a month or the applicable minimum wage, whichever is higher, so the true add-on is larger still.
What mistakes do foreign employers make with employer contributions?
Shrinking basic pay to cut PF. That stopped working on 21 November 2025.
Under the Code on Wages, if allowances exceed half of total pay, the excess is added back to wages. PF and gratuity then follow. Our guide to salary structure in India shows a compliant split.
The second mistake is leaving employer PF out of the cost to company figure in the offer. Then the employee’s expected take-home and your budget never match.
The third is forgetting the ceiling moved. Payroll set up before 17 September 2026 may still cap PF at ₹1,800 a month instead of ₹3,000, which leaves you with arrears, interest at 12% a year and damages.

What else do people ask about employer contribution?
Is employer PF contribution part of CTC?
Usually, yes. Most Indian offers include employer PF and gratuity inside CTC, so the employee never sees them in monthly pay.
Is employer PF contribution mandatory above ₹25,000?
No. Above the ceiling you can cap contributions at ₹3,000 a month, unless you have agreed to contribute on actual wages.
Is employer contribution taxable for employees?
Mostly not. But employer contributions to PF, NPS and superannuation above ₹7.5 lakh a year in total are taxable as a perquisite.
