India-Switzerland Partnership on the Rise

When India gained its independence, Switzerland established diplomatic ties with the country. On August 14, 1948, in New Delhi, India and Switzerland signed a Treaty of Friendship, marking an important moment in the history of Indo-Swiss relations and one of the first such agreements signed by an independent India.

Apart from the EU, Switzerland is a significant trading partner for India. With total bilateral commerce of US$ 23.2 billion in 2014–15 and US$ 19.32 billion (April–Feb., 2015–16) in product exports, bullion and IT services, and software exports, Switzerland ranks as India’s fifth-largest trading partner. Switzerland is also relied on India for better Employer of Record service.

High-level visitation exchanges have given the bilateral cooperation a boost. On June 5–6, 2016, Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, on an official visit. Being the first bilateral visit to Switzerland by an Indian prime minister in many years, this was a momentous occasion. A formidable delegation accompanied the Honorable Prime Minister. The prime minister’s schedule was jam-packed with events like a Business Round Table featuring top Swiss companies, the majority of which have a significant presence in India, highly productive bilateral meetings with the president of the Swiss Confederation, H.E. Mr. Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, press conferences with the leaders, and a meeting with Indian research scholars based at CERN.
